Authenticity and "fun shopping": the creation of urban leisure centres.

Another ALTAREA innovation is the creation in large population centres of urban shopping centres with an emphasis on leisure activities. Surveys about attitudes to consumption show that consumers would like these activities to respect the values important to them, and particularly authenticity. These values reflect the increasing trend for more time to be devoted to leisure and relaxation.

Bercy Village has been designed to meet these new expectations.

La Cour Saint-Emilion and its 42 wine and spirits storerooms listed as additional historical monuments is one of the last remaining parts of the Entrepôts de Bercy, where for more than a century, the largest wine market in the world was held.

Now restored and glorified under the supervision of the architects of Bâtiments de France, the Cour Saint-Emilion storerooms have renewed their links to the past and to the whole history of Bercy, a place of celebration and pleasure. Bercy Village offers an original range of products with the emphasis on gastronomy, wines, dining and cooking. Combining the restored storerooms with contemporary structures, Bercy Village provides a select choice of restaurants, boutiques, cafés, and shops selling equipment and decorations for the table and for the kitchen. In addition, there are areas for household appliances, cultural activities and leisure. Bercy Village received 6 million visitors in 2003.

80% of visitors come back every two months. Cultural events and amusements provide the facilities with added conviviality.
In 2004, Bercy Village hosted photography exhibitions (in partnership with the Ecole des Beaux-Arts), the district carnival, and the BD Delcourt Festival, thus confirming its place as a cultural centre of eastern Paris.
